Electric scooters, once hailed as a sustainable and efficient transportation option, are now facing increased scrutiny and regulatory action globally. Melbourne, Australia, has recently decided to ban e-scooter rentals following a surge in safety concerns and accidents.

The city council has terminated contracts with operators Lime and Neuron, citing hundreds of complaints and a significant rise in injuries. The ban comes after a two-year trial that began in 2022, during which e-scooters were popular for their low carbon footprint, reducing emissions by over 400 tons. However, a December 2023 report from the Royal Melbourne Hospital highlighted 256 e-scooter-related injuries and one fatality, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures.

The decision in Melbourne reflects a broader reevaluation of e-scooter programs worldwide. Paris banned rental e-scooters in 2023, while Copenhagen introduced strict regulations after an initial ban in 2020. Barcelona has restricted e-scooter use in historic areas since 2016. In London, public trials continue, but privately owned e-scooters are illegal on public roads. Rome and other cities have also adjusted their policies to address the challenges posed by e-scooters.

In Seoul, K-pop star Suga recently made headlines for riding an e-scooter under the influence, leading to a fine and a revoked license. His apology highlights ongoing issues with the misuse of e-scooters, including safety and legal concerns. As cities grapple with the benefits and drawbacks of e-scooters, the debate over their future continues.
